When the ice on the Adirondack lakes and rivers, it can be both a terrible and magnificent thing to see. With ice sometimes more than a foot thick, the rush of water due to melting snow from a sudden warm spell, will raise the level of the rivers and crack the ice. Chunks then float downstream and if enough pieces build up on the rocks of this shallow river, they will actually cause it to dam up. With no place to go, the river will overflow its banks and flood.
