Painted during the 2025 Keeseville Plein Air Festival. The temperature was in the 90's and so, with free admission for artists into Ausable Chasm, I stopped at the first viewing platform in the shade. This rock formation was labeled Elephant Head - I thought it barely resembled anything. But as I studied the forms and painted it, that elephant head came to life in the layers of pinkish orange Potsdam Sandstone. This canyon was carved millions? of years ago and much of the flat stone the trail crossed contained hardened ripples of ancient sea bottoms.
