I encountered this giant snapping turtle while drifting in my canoe in East Pine Pond, in the St Regis Canoe Area. The massive, prehistoric-looking shell had to be 2 feet long. I took plenty of photos, thinking the turtle was asleep, but as I drifted closer he lifted his head up and looked my way. I was actually concerned that he might create enough of a wake to capsize my canoe (not really), however he simply slid into the water and disappeared when I got too close.
Included in "Close Encounters of the Wild Kind", featured artist exhibit for August 2015, Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery. Currently on display and available through the Giant Mountain Studio in Schroon Lake.
