Early one June morning, while driving around to find a view to paint, I spotted this new family - the fawn could not have been very old. I was on the Blue Mountain Road and had just passed the out buildings of the Bay Pond property. This had actually been one of the first places in the Adirondacks that I explored, over 40 years ago, and had noted then that it looked like what I expected northern arctic tundra to look like. All low scrub blueberry bushes and ferns, dotted with the remains of old, weathered trees. Later I learned that in the early part of the 20th century there had been a massive forest fire here. I read that it burned so hot it burned everything way down below the surface - which was why it looked so barren in the 1970's. Finally, now, there are new trees growing, and new life.
