Mandalas
These are the oil and watercolor paintings in the unique style I developed, based on mandalas of Tibetan Buddhism. Stuck at home for 2 weeks during "The Ice Storm" in January 1998, I had a lot of time to paint. I'd been doing watercolors of Adirondack landscapes, and for some reason decided to try putting landscapes into the symmetrical shapes of a mandala. The mandalas I did in college were hard edge, color field paintings - basically colored symmetric designs based on Buddhist mandalas. They were my attempt at working abstractly, without subject matter, to meet the aesthetics of the current time and culture. But my true love was the wild landscape. In Buddhism, the mandala is the graphic representation of the spiritual universe. The Adirondack are my spiritual universe.
I painted all these mandalas until I discovered the joy of plein air painting. Being outdoors, experiencing the Adirondacks, painting them at the same time. The mandala have all been sold, except for the ink one and the 3-dimensional piece.
