1999 New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Grant

Sandra Hildreth

In 1998 I applied for a NYSCA Grant and was awarded funds to continue pursuing my interest in 19th century Adirondack paintings and to increase my concentration on producing my own work. The majority of the painting was done during the summer of 1999, although I spent much time hiking and canoeing in the Adirondacks throughout the year, visited museums such as the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake and the Albany Institute of History & Art, and did an intensive amount of reading and internet research. While the grant period ends with the close of the year, my passion for the wilderness landscape will never end. It is imperative that wild places like this be preserved for future generations.

In addition, I gave a number of slide presentations on my research and my paintings, was accepted in 7 out of 8 juried shows (winning 3 first place and 1 purchase award), and had solo exhibitions at the North Country Art Gallery in Canton and the North Country Artist Guild Gallery in Saranac Lake. One of my mandala paintings was on loan to the Adirondack Park Agency, in Raybrook, and then went to New York City as part of a Traveling Exhibition through the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. The NYSCA grant was administered by the North Country Library System.
